Epoxy Zinc-rich Primer (2K)

Description

Epoxy Zinc-rich Primer (2-component) is made from refined epoxy resin, zinc powder, and other materials. It is a two-component paint that is mixed with a curing agent in proportion. This paint is suitable for steel components such as ships, bridges, containers, and chemical equipment.

Best For

  • steel structure protection
  • industrial floor systems
  • heavy-duty anti-corrosion projects

Buyer Benefits

  • strong adhesion to prepared substrates
  • good chemical resistance
  • suitable for multi-coat protective systems

Key Features

  • Resistant to solvent corrosion
  • Excellent anti-rust performance
  • Provides cathodic protection
  • Penetrates into welding seams
  • Excellent water-resistant and anti-rust properties
  • Stable weather resistance under sunlight

Typical Coating System

Typical epoxy system: epoxy primer, optional epoxy intermediate coat, and polyurethane or fluorocarbon topcoat when exterior color and weather resistance are required.

Application Guide

Application Method 1. Surface Preparation: For steel with mill scale: Sandblast to Sa2.5 grade, with a surface roughness of 30-75um. Alternatively, use pickling treatment to completely remove all mill scale and rust, followed by thorough neutralization, water washing, and passivation. For steel without mill scale: Sandblast to Sa2.5 grade or grind with pneumatic or electric flexible grinding wheels to St3 grade. For steel coated with shop primer: Perform secondary rust removal on damaged paint film areas, rusted areas, and white rust on zinc-rich primer. Completely remove the white rust and grind to St3 grade. 2. Application Conditions The substrate temperature must be at least 3°C higher than the dew point temperature. The relative humidity should not exceed 85%. When the outdoor temperature is below 0°C, the reaction of the epoxy curing agent stops, and construction is not advisable. 3. Recommended Number of Coating Passes For airless spraying: One pass with a dry film thickness of 50-80um. For brushing or rolling: 2-3 passes are required. 4. Coating Intervals At a substrate temperature of 10°C: Minimum interval of 48 hours. At 20°C: Minimum interval of 24 hours. At 30°C: Minimum interval of 16 hours. The maximum interval can be several months (if no zinc salts have formed on the paint film surface). Note on Zinc-rich Primer: After extended exposure, zinc salts (i.e., basic zinc carbonate, also known as white rust) may form on the surface. Therefore, the paint film should not be exposed for too long before applying the next layer. If a longer coating interval is necessary, it is recommended to apply epoxy micaceous iron oxide paint as a seal coat to reduce the need for secondary rust removal. In clean indoor environments, the zinc salts will not form for several months; in clean outdoor environments, no zinc salts will form within 14 days. However, in industrial or marine environments, zinc salts will form quickly. As such, the interval for applying subsequent paint should be minimized. If zinc salts have already formed on the surface, sweep blasting or mechanical rust removal methods should be used to remove all zinc salts and dirt before applying the next primer. 5. Subsequent Matching Coats Epoxy micaceous iron oxide anti-rust paint, iron oxide red epoxy anti-rust paint, epoxy zinc phosphate anti-rust paint, epoxy aluminum tripolyphosphate anti-rust paint, epoxy bituminous paint, chlorinated rubber anti-rust paint, acrylic polyurethane, and other types of topcoats.
