Environment Definition
ISO 12944 CX is used for extreme atmospheric corrosivity. It is relevant when steel is exposed to severe offshore or marine conditions, very aggressive industrial atmospheres, high salt loading, or project conditions that go beyond ordinary C5 assumptions.
Typical examples include offshore structures, severe marine infrastructure, exposed port facilities, splash-zone-adjacent steel, and highly aggressive chemical plant areas. Immersion and buried service still require a dedicated review, because atmospheric classification alone is not enough.
Coating Selection Logic
CX should not be treated as a simple thicker version of a C4 or C5 system. The specification must define surface preparation, edge preparation, coating compatibility, total dry film thickness, inspection procedure, expected durability, and maintenance access.

Technical Review Points
- Separate atmospheric exposure from splash, immersion, buried, and chemical contact exposure.
- Confirm inspection and repair procedures for edges, welds, bolts, and field joints.
- Do not claim certification or service life without project-specific documentation.
- Request current TDS/SDS, test evidence, packaging, and export documentation before quotation.
